Star Wars Drawings Baby Yoda

If you have some interest in theStar Wars franchise, you must have come across theBaby Yoda´s figure. This cute character is a member of a race of small but powerful beings that display an amazing knowledge and control of the Force. So, if you have ever been in awe ofBaby Yoda, then in this drawing tutorial you are in for a fun ride.

We will be showing you how to draw a perfect image of aBaby Yoda from start to finish and we would be doing this in 9 easy steps. The drawing would capture his outfit and looks. How amazing is that?!. You should also note that the more familiar you are with each step, the more likely your final draft would be flawless and the more likely it would appeal to an audience.

Before we start let me remind you that we have more Star Wars related tutorials in case you are interested:

That said, we would start up by drawing a dummy. The manikin would serve as a foundation for our final sketch. Ready?. Let's rock and roll!.

STEP 1: DRAWING THE BODY

Using the above picture as a guide, theBaby Yoda´sbody should be drawn using a 3/4 perspective. This just means that the right side which faces the viewers would be drawn bigger in size than the left side.

Baby Yoda´s small body is fully covered by a coat with fur around the neck. Here we will represent the furry jacket´s collar like a band on top of the shape of the coat. Remember, this a dummy on top of which we will draw our final line art, so we will draw the tufts of fur and other details once our dummy is completed.

The whole coat will be divided by a vertical line, that will help us understand better the 3/4 perspective of our character.

STEP 2: DRAWING THE ARMS

The second step will be to draw the arms. Both arms will be fully covered by the coat´s sleeves that will end up also covered by the fur around the wrist's areas. Obviously, we will not draw fur yet. Remember this is a dummy and we will represent the fur by creating a couple of donut-like shapes around the wrists. We will draw the tufts of fur when drawing the final line art.

Both arms will be drawn in different positions and perspectives. The left-arm should be drawn close to the body with the hand barely visible coming out from inside the furry sleeve. Actually, due to the perspective, only 2 of the 3 fingers the characters have on each hand will be visible.

The right arm on the other side will be fully extended forward with the hand open and the palm clearly visible. Here, due to the perspective, the arm will be almost hidden by the open hand and the fur around the sleeve.

If you are interested in developing your anatomy drawing skills and learn how to draw characters digitally, you should check my drawing video course. You can find more information clicking the image below:

STEP 3: DRAWING THE HEAD

The head shape will be quite easy to draw. Just draw an oval shape on top of the coat, with a cross in the middle of the oval, and slightly tilted to the left, so the head will be in a 3/4 view like the body is.

The ears will be drawn on the sides of the oval, and they will look triangular in nature. Both pointing out upwards at a 45-degree angle, one to the right and the other to the left of the character.

STEP 4: DRAWING THE FLOATING STONES

Drawing the floating stones will be quite easy. Draw the big stone like a rhomboid and 2 small stones like irregular pointy shapes. Something similar to misshape triangles.

STEP 5: DRAWING THE FROG

The last part of our dummy before we jump to draw the final line art on top of it, will be to draw the frog´s dummy.

The frog will be drawn at the feet of Baby Yoda. The frog´s body will be drawn like two rounded shapes with 2 legs coming out from the right side.

On top of the body, another sphere will be drawn. This sphere is the head, and we will draw a cross inside of it to represent where the eyes and mouth will be located.

STEP 6: DRAWING THE FINAL LINE ART

For this stage, you would need to fade out the dummy already drawn. This is to prevent the manikin´s sketch from interfering with your final sketch. Using traces lefts of the original manikin´s sketch, you would then go on to draw the final lines. It should comprise of well-detailed features

Also, another important detail is to drawwrinklelines from the clothing.Wrinklesin clothing come from tension areas, like thearmpit, the sleeves, and the bottom of the tunic covering the thighs, where the fabric of the clothing is being pulled, stretched, or folded.

STEP 7: PAINTING THE BASE COLOR

This step is quite straight forward. Pick a base color for each part of the drawing and fill this area with it. Light Green for the skin, Dark Green for the frog, Light Brown for the coat, etc…

STEP 8: PAINTING THE SHADOWS

Painting the shadows is probably the most important part when rendering a painting. Knowing how to place the shadows correctly will help us convey the idea of depth and volume in our painting.

Which areas are directly exposed to light and which areas are partially or fully hidden from the light. This is the main purpose of painting the shadows. Try to use common sense and imagine which areas will be hidden from the light.

Also, you should use warmer tones for the shadows so when you paint the lights in the next step, we can use cold tones for creating a nice contrast.

STEP 9: PAINTING THE LIGHTS

This is the last step of this tutorial. When painting the lights you should use bluish cold tones. You should paint the brighter points of light on the head and use more subtle illumination for the coat and other secondary parts. Doing this we make sure the biggest contrast point between lights and shadows remains around the head area, so we direct the viewer's attention towards the main focus area.

Rememeber that we have more Star Wars related tutorials, in case you are intersted:

CONCLUSION

Right here is where we call our drawing tutorial of Baby Yoda a wrap. You can go on and express some satisfaction at what you have been able to put together on your drawing pad. However, you should not hang up your drawing tools just yet. We advise that you repeat the procedure a couple of times more. This would enable you to have a better grasp of character drawing and soon enough you will be able to polish up your skills and draw without seeking the assistance of a drawing tutorial.
